Independent home furnishings retailer Barkers has posted a fourth successive year of turnover growth, while its expansion and rebranding has seen recent sales ‘exceed’ expectations.
According to Barkers (Northallerton) Limited’s latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 January 2016, total sales rose by 5.6% to £13.1m from £12.4m in 2015. Operating profit also experienced an uptick of 25% to £1.5m from £1.2m, while overall profit for the year rose by 10% to £1.1m.
During the year under review Barkers underwent a major £3m rebranding project, which saw its furnishing store expand from 40,000sq ft to 60,000sq ft and renamed Barkers Home.
Commenting within the report, Barkers said: “Since opening the store has far exceeded budgeted sales, with many of the new customers coming from out of our normal catchment area.
“The past year has been an exciting time in the business and trading results continue to be encouraging.”
Barkers Home recently announced that it won a prestigious award following its £3m redevelopment of its Northallerton store on Yarrorth Road.
Earlier this month, 8 June, Barkers Home won in the commercial building category at the North and East Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards, which was held at the Royal York Hotel in York.
Ian Barker, Barkers Home director, said: “The whole redevelopment has transformed Barkers Home into a modern, vibrant store, and to win an award for the building is the icing on the cake.
“We have also received fantastic feedback from customers, praising both the interior and exterior of the building. To be a serious player in the furnishing market, we need to continually improve, and that was behind our redevelopment plans.”
