The UK Government has re-opened the consultation period into new proposals effecting fire safety regulations within the furniture and furnishings sector.
Released on 14 September 2016, the proposals aim to replace the existing Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 following discussions with industry stakeholders that have indicated that the Regulations are no longer entirely appropriate to changing consumer expectations, and furniture manufacturing practices.
Areas under examination include the scope of the Regulations, testing regime effectiveness and enforcement traceability.
The consultation period is open until 11 November 2016 with the documents available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/furniture-and-furnishing-fire-safety-regulations-proposed-changes-2016
The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) has said that it is currently analysing the proposals and will also be arranging workshops to discuss this further and to define FIRA’s response.
