Cabinet Maker catches up with Jim Murphy, managing director at Airsprung Group about the latest developments for the business and its plans for this year’s Bed Show.

Privately owned furniture business, Airsprung Group PLC has been around since 1870 and remains proud to be a UK manufacturer today, with more than 500 people employed across its sites in Chorley, Bristol and Trowbridge.

With a number of brands spanning the furniture industry, from upholstery to bedroom furniture, and of course bed brands to suit a multitude of retailer demands – all of which will be coming to this year’s Bed Show in Telford from 19-20 September.

The group’s Hush-a-Bye brand provides a range of stylish mid-market pocket sprung beds to traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ retailers, with a flexible approach ensuring that special sizes and bespoke options are available. “At Hush-a-Bye we pride ourselves on attention to detail, quality and customer service and we focus on servicing the traditional high street retailer,” explained managing director, Jim Murphy.

YOU MAY BE SURPRISED AT THE BREADTH OF OUR OFFERING. WE OFFER A LOT MORE THAN THE GREAT VALUE WE ARE KNOWN FOR

Last year’s Bed Show was the launch pad for Hush-a-Bye’s innovative easyturn system, with technology which ensures that consumers need not settle for a heavy, unwieldy mattress or a no-turn mattress which can have reduced longevity. “The feedback from retailers for easyturn has been fantastic,” said Jim, “so at this year’s show we are happy to reveal the latest additions to this range: three new easyturn models with memory foam. Come and see for yourself how simple, elegant and beneficial the easyturn system is.”

The company’s Airsprung Beds brand on the other hand, is one of the oldest names in the bed industry, and arguably one of the leading manufacturers of white label products in the UK. “If you think you know Airsprung,” began Jim, “you may be surprised at the breadth of our offering. We offer a lot more than the great value we are known for, our unparalleled industry experience and insight will help you build the perfect range, whatever the needs.

Contract Sales

“As the largest single site bed manufacturer in the UK, you really have to see the facility for yourself to understand the scale. We can’t bring the factory to Telford so this year we are doing the next best thing.” That’s right, visitors to this year’s Bed Show can come and see the company on its stand and actually take a virtual reality tour of the manufacturing facility.

“Once you’ve had your virtual visit,” continued Jim, “we can work with you to build a unique range. The ‘Build a bed’ section gives you the opportunity to specify a range from first principles.” And last but by no means least from Airsprung Beds, the brand will exhibit its Hush Premium mattress, which recently secured a prestigious Which? Best Buy award.

The Gainsborough brand will also feature at the show this year, having undergone a refresh to better demonstrate the qualities that are at the heart of the brand - quality and craftsmanship - which are demonstrated on its new luxury bed range, which combines traditional techniques with contemporary design. Gainsborough managing director Nick Gigg explained: “The models have the features you expect from Gainsborough; luxurious fillings and fabric options, hand-stitched detail and mattress spring counts at a level you would expect from the premier end of our industry. It is no exaggeration to say this is the most comfortable and eye-catching range we have ever produced.”
Airsprung Group PLC’s Swanglen brand is a perfect demonstration of its commitment to offer a full suite of products to its national and independent retailer customers. For the Bed Show, the brand is particularly excited to launch the Signature collection, which has been designed to capture the demand for bigger, bolder and more fashionable floor standing headboards, from the simple lines of the curved headboard to an impressive 60” tall winged design.

Of the new range Jim explained: “Traditional fabrics such as chenille remain popular and we are reflecting the growing trend towards different fabrics including crushed velvets, faux wools and distressed leather look. We are also including a fantastic new satin material in a variety of colours. Also on show this year is our hugely successful next-day range and an exciting new kids range.”
