A huge fire that engulfed two trailers at a Blackburn-based mattress company is being investigated as a suspected arson attack.

Mattress and furniture manufacturer Icon Designs, which has its premises located on Mill Hill, suffered a devastating fire on two of its lorry containers that stored machinery and latex foam on 31 July 2016.

Three fire crews from Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene and ‘quickly’ extinguished the flames. Due to the upholstery foam inside the trailers, a mass of black smoke filled the sky, which could be seen at some distance.

A statement from the Lancashire Fire Service said: “Two lorry trailers parked in the yard of commercial premises were in use as storage containers for upholstery foam. The fire generated a plume of black smoke visible from some distance away.

“Three fire engines and crews from Blackburn (2) and Darwen and firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus quickly extinguished the fire using three water jets connected to hydrant supply. There were no casualties. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

Lancashire Police also attended the incident with the suspicion of arson under investigation. A statement made to local press read: “It looks like several people are involved and enquiries are on-going.”

The police are asking anyone with information to call 101 quoting log number ED1611486 of 31 July.
