Furniture delivers encouraging week despite Home sales slipping to negative territory for John Lewis.

According to its latest weekly sales figures to 13 August, total sales were down by 2.3% at £71.4m on last year, as hot weather saw footfall plummet.

Within the sectors, John Lewis Home reported a ‘difficult’ week with sales down by 1.4% year-on-year, although Furniture sales performed strongly with sales up by 4.2%.

Elsewhere, Fashion ‘struggled’ – declining by 2.6%, whilst Electricals and Home Technology saw sales drop 2.2%.

Simon Russell, director, retail operations development, John Lewis, said: “As the hot weather continued across most parts of the UK, it proved to be a challenging week, footfall was down as customers chose to enjoy the great outdoors, as well as making the most of the school holidays by heading abroad with their families.”
