Multi-channel retailer John Lewis has reported a lacklustre week as sales were down despite a solid furniture performance.

According to its latest weekly sales figures to 27 August 2016, total sales fell 3.5% at £78.9m compared to the same week last year as the late summer heatwave kept shoppers away from stores.

Despite the slow week, furniture sales proved to be a hit, up by 11.2% compared to last year, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Home category out of negative territory, as sales were down by 1.7%.

In the other categories, John Lewis saw fashion sales fall by 9.9%, whilst Electricals and Home Technology bucked the trend with sales up by 2.6% on the year.
