Festive preparations drive up furniture sales for John Lewis despite overall sales falling for the retailer, a week before Black Friday.
According to its latest weekly sales figures to 19 November 2016, total sales fell by 2.6% at £114.2m on last year, with only one of its core categories delivering a growth, that being Home.
John Lewis said that Home sales registered a 0.6% uptick in sales, with furniture seen as the main driver with sales up by 3.2%. Home accessories also contributed a 1.8% increase as shoppers looked for big ticket items to spruce up their homes before Christmas.
Within the other categories, Fashion sales were down by 0.4%, whilst Electrical & Home Technology sales experienced a heavy fall of 8.2%.
Maggie Porteous, director, shop trade, John Lewis, said: “With five weeks to go to Christmas people are beginning to decorate their homes but seem to be waiting for the Black Friday deals to do much of their gift buying.”
