Bury St Edmonds-based independent retailer Glasswells has reported a growth in turnover for a fourth consecutive year as all its retail departments ‘improved’ sales.

Highlighted within its latest filed annual accounts for the period ended 27 February 2016, Glasswells, which is currently celebrating its 70th year, saw sales surge 6% to £23.3m from £22m in 2015.

Gross profit also experienced a growth of 46% to £10.7m from £10.1m last year, whilst profit for the period grew 0.9% to £2.09m from £2.07m.

Stated within the report, Glasswells said that the Furniture, Carpets, Curtains, Linens and Gifts departments all improved sales, alongside its catering and contract departments.

The company, which has been established since 1946, added that only its Removals sector saw a ‘reduction in turnover’ as a result of a ‘poor Spring in 2015’.

To mark its milestone year, Glasswells launched a series of competitions and special events, culminating with two voucher giveaways worth £7,000 earlier this month.

Glasswells indicated that the effects of Brexit are still ‘unknown’ as current trading in 2016 has ‘started encouragingly’.
