Independent department store chain Fenwick has announced that it plans to open its new Colchester branch this month.

Becoming the largest department store in the region, Fenwick Colchester has been under redevelopment for the better part of two and half years, investing around £35m.

Scheduled for relaunch on the 15 September 2016, the new 120,000sq ft space has been expanded by 50% and will also mark the end of the Williams & Griffin name, which is to be replaced with the Fenwick identity.

Fenwick, which had acquired the Williams & Griffin store back in 2008, said that the redevelopment has created 70 new jobs for the local area, as well as stating that the revamp retains the mix between modern and older architecture.

The 11-strong chain offers a wide selection of furniture, home and fashion items across English-based locations as varied as London, York and its founding city of Newcastle, which dates back to 1882.
