Fashion and homeware chain Next has confirmed it has taken a former BHS store at intu Metrocentre in Gateshead.
Next will double its existing floor space in the Metrocentre, with intu revealing it will reconfigure 85,000sq ft for the retail chain’s latest store, which plans to open in early 2018.
The new store space, which was used by BHS for around 30 years until its closure earlier this summer, is set to create a number of new jobs and will operate alongside its Next Home outlet.
Commenting on the investment, Kate Grant, regional director at intu, said: “This fantastic new space at the heart of intu Metrocentre will build on the strength of what is already one of Next’s most successful stores, allowing them to attract even more customers and create a number of new jobs.
“It’s a significant investment by Next that alongside our own investment programme represents a long-term commitment to intu Metrocentre and the north east region as a thriving retail destination.”
The work forms part of an ongoing investment programme at intu Metrocentre including a £5m refit of the ground floor and café area, which saw House of Fraser extend its store by 2,346sq ft.
