Steinhoff UK Upholstery (SUKU), part of Steinhoff International, has announced it has recently invested £500,000 in new Gerber machines as it plans to expand its operations.

The latest investment, which includes two Gerber HX Paragon Cutters and two Gerber XLs50 Spreaders with 20 metre tables, allows SUKU to cut seven cutting metres per minute, whilst also utilising quality and fabric control.

SUKU has recently recruited a CAD manager to further develop the savings that can be made from setting up model markers to work with its new Gerber cutter’s user interface panel.

Julian Waite, general manager at SUKU, said: “Our investment in these Gerber machines has given SUKU the ability to produce 2,000 suite equivalents per week on a standard 39 hour week, given the volumes.

“The Gerber cutters also allow us to take control of fabric ordering and stock control. Our intention is for SUKU to cut 100% in house and distribute to suppliers for a sew only process.”

Located in South Wales, SUKU manufactures furniture for sale to Group Retail companies. Its latest investment gives SUKU one of the biggest cutting facilities in the UK and currently employs 250 staff.
